Beauty artist's tech debt

What and to whom does a beauty artist owe?

The idea behind the beauty artist's technical debt metaphor is very simple. We learn as quickly as possible and at the same time, we miss the basic knowledge, the foundation of which allows us to easily vary in certain situations when working with a client.

So. Let's imagine "Irishka" - a hypothetical student for a potential makeup artist.

Somehow, Irishka decided to become a beauty artist and went to choose training. Irishka has two options - a course of 10 lessons and a course of 30 lessons for the same money. Is it worth saying that, most likely, in the longer training there were important subjects and more practice? Of course, a course of 30 lessons is a harsh thing and takes time. But that doesn’t matter anymore, the main thing is that the newly-minted student chose a short course.

It was at this moment that Irishka sold her soul to the devil, taking her technical beauty debt.

What is “technical beauty debt”?

The idea of such a term was invented by Ward Cunningham (an American programmer), and the essence is taken from the structure of finance.

You, as a subject - a BEAUTY artist - must be trained and gain knowledge in order to be such.

And technical debt is the resources and knowledge necessary to bring you into a state corresponding to a professional in your industry, but not sufficient to work with a non-standard task.

Let's explain the example of Irishka. Irishka went through a quick training and is technically a beauty artist and knows how to work, but she does not have enough knowledge and skills to work competently in a non-standard situation or with a non-standard client.

Like financial debt, technical debt forces us to pay interest in the form of additional costs that we will have to incur in the future due to the fact that we have now made a choice in favor of fast learning.

So, in order to learn how to work with any tasks, Irishka will need to undergo additional training, investing time, effort, and funds.

Options for technical debt

Technical debt is different, based on motivation and awareness when choosing training. There are such versions of technical debt:

Conscious - when the beauty artist understands that long-term training is better, but still goes for a short one because she wants to start working faster.

Unconscious - misunderstanding of the learning process and the need for practice and theoretical material.

Confrontation - unwillingness to recognize new trends and the need to improve skills.

The main reasons that can lead to technical debt

  • Unwillingness to understand the training program;
  • Emotional pressure (the desire to quickly go to work and start earning money invested in training);
  • Work on one (the same) cosmetics;
  • Unwillingness to track trends and improve skills;
  • Lack of competition and competitive spirit that motivate development.

When can you get technical debt?

Of course, situations are different and sometimes we are forced to sacrifice quality in favor of speed. In this situation, you must be sure that you are walking this path consciously, and after graduation, you will be looking for how to fix it. Or maybe you don't have time because you live abroad.

When you are not sure that this is exactly what you really want or at the moment there is no way to purchase a lot of cosmetics for a full start of work.

How to pay off technical debt?

  • Analyze what your technical debt consists of and what are the weaknesses in your work;
  • Make time for education and professional development;
  • Make time each month for new practices and work on things you haven't done in a while.

Let's summarize. Technical debt can be our partner when it comes to gaining time, but you have to be careful as quality is often lost in speed.

Technical debt reduces productivity and interest, so try to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

Don't confuse technical debt with the usual mess and inconsistency in education and work.

Remember that repaying a debt is always more difficult than taking it, and relearning what you have learned is even more difficult.

Learn right, and most importantly in a timely manner!
