Hello dear brow masters! This blog is for you!
Can we call a brow artist an artist? Of course, yes! A brow artist is a designer of eyebrows, and brushes are an extension of their hand. Therefore, it is extremely important for a brow artist to choose such brushes that allow them to create masterpieces, and the process itself is comfortable and enjoyable.
How should a brow artist choose brushes for work?
The famous sculptor Rodin said that art is nothing more than a feeling. But without knowledge of volumes, proportions, color, and without a masterful brush, any living feeling becomes impossible.
Nowadays, a very wide range of tools for eyebrow design is available. It is often quite difficult to choose what is needed. Therefore, to find a good assistant, a brow artist needs to understand what actions will be performed during work and which brushes will cope with certain tasks. It is also important to know what brushes exist in general and what to pay attention to when choosing.
Main characteristics of eyebrow brushes:
- material they are made of (natural or synthetic);
- density of bristle packing (flat, fluffy);
- shape (straight, angled, rounded, "petal," etc.)
Brow artists most often use brushes made of synthetic bristles (taklon, nylon). It is very practical: it retains its shape for a long time despite paint or henna, does not stain, and is easy to clean. The difference between taklon and nylon is that taklon is softer and imitates natural bristles, while nylon is stiffer, which has its advantages, for example, when creating clear and even lines during sketching or coloring.
Brushes for preparing the skin before coloring
Now let’s look at the main stages and, accordingly, which brushes a brow artist needs.
Where does the eyebrow design procedure start? Usually, with skin preparation. First, the master uses a cleansing and degreasing product, shampoo, or mousse, distributing it across the eyebrow area with a disposable brush. Depending on the type and condition of the skin, additional products such as a scrub, moisturizing cream, botox, or oil may also be used. These products are conveniently applied not with a brush like shampoo but specifically with a brush. It can be flat, wide, with a straight edge or rounded.
Pay attention to Synthetic Creator № 20, 23. They are rounded. With a straight edge - 21, 22, 25.
The size is selected depending on the application area: the larger it is, the bigger the brush needed, as it will be faster. In cases where the product needs to be distributed locally, we use a medium or small brush.
Important: if a brow artist uses dense textures like a scrub, the brush should be firm, while for oil, a softer brush can be used. When working with oils, it is appropriate to use synthetic brushes since this material does not absorb the product as natural bristles or cotton swabs would.
Brushes for creating eyebrow architecture and sketches
The next step is sketching. For this, the brow artist also needs synthetic brushes, firm, not soft. Especially when working with brow paste. For perfectly clear lines, it is better to choose a straight or angled brush rather than a rounded one. It can be used to outline the eyebrow frame with shadows, paste, or pencil.
Useful Synthetic Creator № 3, 16, 19, 21, 22, 24, or 25.
They are different: there are straight and angled, narrow and wide, short and long. Not all of them are needed at once; you can choose a convenient tool from the list. They are also great for correcting a sketch when a line needs adjustment. This can be done with the same brushes, but first, clean them of any shadow or paste residues.
Brushes for coloring eyebrows
We move on to a very responsible stage - coloring the eyebrows. This means that assistants must be reliable and tested. Synthetic Creator №5 has gained great love and respect from brow artists. It is ideal: flat, angled, firm, and easy to hold. It can be used to apply both paint (cream or gel) and henna. There is a similar but shorter one - №13.
Brushes for laminating eyebrows and eyelashes
For work, a brow artist will also need separate brushes for the eyebrow lamination procedure (long-term styling). This service is very popular among clients, so the master must have everything necessary for it. For applying compositions with a thin line, the brush itself should also be thin.
Synthetic Creator № 11, 13, 26 are suitable for applying compositions. They vary in size but are generally all thin, just for detailed work.
Important! For compositions 1 and 2, it is better to choose separate brushes rather than work with one. To avoid confusion, you can choose different sizes: for composition 1, take a thinner one (since the composition is applied with a narrower line), and for composition 2, a thicker one.
When coloring lashes during lamination, or even when it’s a separate procedure, it is very convenient to use a wide brush because it captures and colors many lashes at once. As mentioned earlier, these can be № 20, 23 (rounded) or 21, 22, 25 (straight).
Of course, every brow artist has their favorite tools that they use more often. The main thing is that the brushes are truly comfortable to work with since they are the master’s main working tool.
It is also equally important that they always look good. Clients pay attention to the organization and cleanliness of the brow artist’s workspace, as it is all right before their eyes. Therefore, it is very important to keep the working area tidy, take care of the tools, and replace them in time with those that look presentable and neat.
Let’s not forget that we are beauty masters, which means that the space around us should also be beautiful!
